soft square

(2024)

My interest in quadrilateral geometry emerged from daily observation, seeing the square objects in my city surroundings, which gradually led me to be more interested in the embodied square in people. In this work, I am interested in seeing the sense of the square, which is the way for humans to have a language of structure and order. In “soft square,” I am interested in the evolution of that sense. I am interested in how we have been developing a more complex sense of square, which brings the square to become softer, more seamless.

“soft square” is a work that brings me back to the stage work, but as a performance, it works in between dance and performance art. This work is a series of materializing processes to my embodied memory of the square. Through movement and sound, the work embodies the process of “becoming a soft square, a fluid frame, soft panels, and puffy walls” as a metaphor for the shifting forms and norms of structure and order.
