Razan Wirjosandjojo is an artist based in Solo, Indonesia. He graduated from the Dance Department of Institut Seni Indonesia Surakarta. He began his dance practice in 2010, learning across diverse spaces and communities in Jakarta until 2017. Since moving to Solo, his artistic development has been influenced by Javanese cultural and art practices, also by his mentorship with Melati Suryodarmo, beginning in 2018.
Starting in 2020, his artistic practice approaches the body as both a physical and temporal site, where movement becomes a conversation between organ and soul, presence and disappearance. The concept of rasa plays a central role in his work as a perceptual system that opens access to hidden memory and intuitive knowledge. Working across dance, performance art, film, and photography, he revisits history in search of experiences of senses which often overlooked by the mainstream view of contemporary culture and discourse.
His performance works include Fajar di Ufuk Barat, presented at On Stage by Studio Plesungan, Surakarta (2021), Bali Perofrming Arts Meeting, Bali (2023). Soft Square, presented at Asiatopia, Bangkok (2024), Undisclosed Territory #14, Studio Plesungan, Karanganyar (2024), March Dance, Chennai (2025), and Bali Performing Arts Meeting, Bali (2025). His film works include Harga Mahal Yang Dibayar Murah, presented at Indonesia Bertutur, Borobudur (2022), Mini Film Festival, Kuala Lumpur (2023), Minikino Film Week, Bali International Short Film Festival (2023), and Alcine Film Festival, Madrid (2023). He is currently active as a student and staff member at Studio Plesungan.

Razan Wirjosandjojo adalah seorang seniman yang berbasis di Solo, Indonesia. Ia lulus dari jurusan Tari Institut Seni Indonesia Surakarta. Ia mulai menekuni praktik tari sejak tahun 2010, belajar di berbagai ruang dan komunitas di Jakarta hingga tahun 2017. Sejak pindah ke Solo, ia melanjutkan pengembangan artistiknya melalui bimbingan berkelanjutan bersama Melati Suryodarmo yang dimulai pada tahun 2018. Praktik karyanya memandang tubuh sebagai situs fisik sekaligus temporal, tempat gerak menjadi percakapan antara organ dan jiwa, kehadiran dan kelenyapan. Konsep rasa memegang peran penting dalam karyanya sebagai sistem pencerapan yang terhubung dengan ingatan tersembunyi dan pengetahuan intuitif. Dengan bekerja lintas wahana: tari, seni performans, film, dan fotografi, ia menelusuri kembali sejarah untuk mencari keragaman pengalaman rasa dan sensasi yang kerap terabaikan oleh budaya arus utama saat ini.

Artist Statement
Tumbuh dari latar belakang tari yang fisikal dan industrial, proses kekaryaan saya menjadi kesempatan untuk kembali memahami tubuh secara lebih holistik. Melalui penciptaan karya, saya tertarik memperluas pemahaman tentang tubuh dan relasinya dengan dunia di dalam maupun di luar dirinya. Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, saya tertarik mencari kemungkinan menghadirkan gerak dan laku dari sudut pandang lain selain “pementasan”. Proses ini membuat karya-karya saya tetap berporos pada tubuh, sekaligus membebaskannya dari batas-batas panggung agar dapat bekerja melalui cara, situasi, dan wahana lain. Saya tertarik pada ide-ide yang memantik pertanyaan mendasar mengenai keberadaan diri, serta mendorong keterlibatan tubuh, gerak, laku, dan ruang-waktu sebagai material yang ikut membahasakan gagasan dalam karya-karya saya. Dalam setiap karya, saya memberi perhatian pada bagaimana pengalaman menjadi dasar dari proses artistik: baik sebagai cara menubuhkan realitas dan hubungan manusia dengan lingkungannya, maupun sebagai pengalaman yang dialami oleh penampil dan yang menyaksikan.

Growing from a background in physical and industrial dance practices, my artistic process has become an opportunity to return to and reconsider the body in a more holistic way. Through making works, I am interested in expanding my understanding of the body and its relationship with the worlds both within and outside itself. In recent years, I have become interested in seeking possibilities for presenting movement and bodily acts from perspectives other than using "theater logic". This process allows my works to remain strongly centered on the body while simultaneously freeing them from the boundaries of the stage, enabling them to operate through other methods, situations, and media. I am drawn to ideas that provoke fundamental questions surrounding existence and the self, encouraging the involvement of the body, movement, bodily acts, and space-time as materials that articulate the ideas carried within my works. In each work, I pay close attention to how "pengalaman" becomes the foundation of the artistic process: it can be understood as how the work serves as the process of embodying nature (alam) as reality, and as how the work becomes a lived experience by both the performer and the witness.
